Can a regular person buy a car from Copart? ›

Buying for personal use in California? Without business licenses, you will need a Broker's help to bid on clean and salvage titled vehicles in California. If you're buying in another state, view the State Licensing Overview or search our No License Required inventory.

To sell a car at the Barrett-Jackson auction, the seller is responsible for paying the entry fee based on the time of day of the auction and the lot number. There is also a seller's commission of 8 percent of the hammer price and the buyer pays a 10 percent buyer's premium on their purchase.

The hundreds of collectible vehicles and automobilia items – all offered with No Reserve, meaning they will sell to the highest bidder – will be on display for all to see right from the beginning, with many still on-site even after they cross the auction block.

If you are a Premier Member, you only need to make a one-time deposit of $400 to bid up to $100,000 per day. All deposits are fully refundable if your account is in good standing and all outstanding invoices have been paid.

Myth #1: Copart Has Hidden Fees

While Member Fees do exist at Copart, no fees are hidden from our Members, and the list can be accessed at any time. It is important for Members to educate themselves on which fees are relevant to them and what to expect before placing a bid on a vehicle.

You must first have a valid government-issued ID on file with Copart to be able to bid. Click here then click on the "Upload License" button in the top right corner to upload your government-issued ID if you have not already done so. Each state has its own specific licensing requirements.

If the lot is not paid in full within 8 calendar days (including the day of sale), the vehicle will be relisted. The Relist Fee will be 10% of the final sale price with a minimum of $600.

A common question we get is “is this like a police auction?” And our answer is… kind of. Copart's inventory is mainly composed of wrecked cars from insurance companies, but we also have some consumers who sell their clean title vehicles through us as well.

Inspection is limited to vehicles currently listed for sale. Tools of any kind, including diagnostic code readers, are not allowed in the yard. See a staff member if you need assistance with a vehicle. As a safety precaution, please do not attempt to start a vehicle without a Copart employee.

Review the high quality photos provided by Copart, either online or on your mobile device. Determine title type (or Ownership Doc Type), estimated repair cost, odometer reading, damage type, and if the keys are included. Inspect the vehicle in person.

Please note, you can only use a credit card for purchases up to $20,000 USD. Any amount over that will need to be made with another payment option.
